Positive motivation involves acting in a manner that causes you to expect gains, and differs from negative motivation that results in a fear of punishment. It can be an effective tool for reaching your weight loss and fitness goals, and here are a few ways to incorporate it into your own workout routine.

#1. Make Yourself a Promise

Many times, having something to look forward to can keep you going when you might otherwise think of quitting. Promise yourself a reward such as a new outfit for improving your fat percentage, or a day at the spa after hitting a new squat weight. Set up positive motivation reminders on your phone or mark them on your calendar to ensure you don’t forget.

#2. Make Your Goals Gradual

The reason many people do not meet their fitness goals is because they seem too overwhelming. Rather than saying you want to run a marathon, set a smaller goal of completing a 5k run, then move on to a half-marathon. Congratulate yourself each time you pass a new milestone, and look back on your progress from time to time so you can continue to remember how far you have come.

A workout does not have to be boring in order to be effective. If you ever start dreading exercise, switch things up a bit by changing your routine, adding new music, or even just by taking things outdoors. Joining a dance class, taking martial arts lessons, or participating in sports are all good ways to incorporate positive motivation into your fitness regimen.
