I struggled with my weight throughout my childhood and teens despite being very athletic. I tried every single diet fad and did tons of cardio but nothing seemed to work. Once I educated myself on the science behind fitness and nutrition, I finally started to see results. My mission became to save other people on the same journey the frustration and time it took me to get to where I finally wanted to be.
I am a certified personal trainer through NASM, ACE and NESTA.
I have learned that there is no fitness or diet prescription that will work for everyone. A person’s body, metabolism and genetic makeup is completely individual and people should be wary of any one-size-fits-all approach. Each of my clients have truly customized fitness and nutrition protocols.
There are a few myths out there that I work hard to dispel with my clients. Most importantly, I want women to get off the cardio machines and start really challenging themselves with resistance training. That is the only sure fire way I have seen clients change their bodies. I also believe that unless a client’s fitness and nutrition program can be seamlessly integrated in to their current lifestyle, it won’t be followed long term, setting them up for a sense of failure. I work hard to strike a balance between what my clients need and what is doable for their day to day reality.
I love to see how much my body is capable of. Competing for me was a way of proving that anyone can bring about amazing changes in their body through sheer hard work. I have always been a natural competitor and I have never relied on excuses like my age or my metabolism to not achieve what my fellow competitors did.
The most important thing is to find a reputable coach who not only cares about how your body will look on stage, but that protects your health and metabolism so that you can be healthy post-show. Rebounding is one of the most difficult things about competing but can be avoided with a knowledgeable and ethical coach.
Most people get motivated to make big changes and sprint out of the gates using a program that is not sustainable. People need to be pragmatic about what is feasible for their lifestyles and what rate of fat loss or muscle gain is realistic and sustainable. There is nothing more demotivating than taking on an unrealistic program at the beginning, seeing some minor improvements and then not being able to sustain those changes and ending up worse off than when you started.
I believe in doing a range of assessments once I start working with a client to establish a starting point. Everyone’s results will slow or plateau after a while at which point people tend to lose motivation. A this point I remind them about the progress they have made since we started and modify their program so they keep seeing changes.
I have days when I really feel like skipping the gym and sitting on the couch eating junk food. But all I need to do is remember how great I feel after a workout and also how miserable I feel when I don’t feed my body something that contributes to my health. Plus, I look around at some other people my age and I realize that proper diet and nutrition really is the fountain of youth. I want to be energetic, vibrant and mobile for the rest of my life!
Peanut butter is my kryptonite. Anyone who knows me knows it can’t be kept anywhere in the house when I’m around.
