Many people desire getting into good enough shape to complete a 5k or longer run, yet don’t actually aspire to complete a race. If you’re one of those people, you might just change your mind when you find out the type of fun races that are available for you to participate in. Here are five we thought were worth mentioning.
The Zombie Run allows you to prepare for a zombie apocalypse and have a good time doing it. During this 5k run, you’ll navigate numerous obstacles, while at the same time constantly dodging “zombies” who want nothing more than to spoil your trip. Expect to get very dirty and wet at one of these fun races, which are held at various locations throughout the southeastern United States.
Billed as “the happiest 5k on the planet”, the Color Run takes place in more than 200 cities in 40 different countries each year. One of these races results in participants being blasted with water balloons filled with colored water while they navigate obstacles that are designed to give the course a tropical beach feel. This is one of the only fun races out there that is just as exciting for participants as it is for spectators.
Touted as having the energy of a dance party, the Electric Run provides you with heart-pounding music to keep you motivated throughout the entire course. Runners are also given a glow bracelet, which pulsates light in conjunction with the beat of the music. You’re not done once you cross the finish line, as a full-blown dance party complete with a live DJ takes place at the end of the race, allowing everyone to mingle and celebrate their accomplishments.
If you are into fun races that are more like child’s play than competitions, an Insane Inflatable event is for you. This race consists of 3.1 miles of inflatable obstacles that have no weight or time limit. Although you may go from one to the next at your own leisure, we think you’ll find getting to all the obstacles a challenge. Surprisingly enough, you can also expect to get very dirty while completing this race. Insane Inflatables races are held throughout the United States and Canada, and require pre-registration.
A Blacklight Run race is similar to a Color Run, but is held at night. Rather than balloons filled with colored water, participants are showered with non-toxic neon glow powder while running underneath high-beam blacklights. Runners are encouraged to wear white clothing in order to make the effects even more vivid. These fun races are held in several major U.S. cities such as New York City, Houston, TX, and Atlanta, GA.
Participating in a race doesn’t have to be dull and boring. These fun races are every bit as physically challenging as a traditional 5k, yet allow you to express yourself in a way that isn’t possible with ordinary events. If you’re looking for more of a challenge, check out these fitness events.
