While doctoring up a healthy orange chicken recipe might come across as a bit of a challenge, there are easier Chinese food staples to start with. Fried rice, stir-fry and lo mein come to mind however a more low carb, high protein option can be made as well, such as chicken lettuce wraps.

Chicken lettuce wraps are a quick, protein-packed meal that can be made numerous ways. These Asian chicken lettuce wraps mimic the ones served at restaurants but have half the sodium, sugar and calories. They also take less than 20 minutes to cook and put together, meaning you can have fresh and healthy Chinese food on your table in no time.

Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps

Serves 4

Sauce Ingredients:

  • 6 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch

Chicken Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. ground chicken
  • 3 green onions, sliced
  • 16 lettuce leaves

Optional:

  • sesame seeds
  • shredded carrots
  • chopped cashews

Directions:

  1. Whisk together the sauce ingredients until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Heat a saucepan over medium heat with a little olive oil. Add ground chicken and cook, breaking up chicken into small pieces.
  3. Once chicken is cooked through, add the sauce to the pan and cook for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in green onions.
  4. To serve, scoop chicken filling into lettuce leaves. Top with shredded carrots, cashews and sesame seeds if desired.
